Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th of November, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now OnestiThe name of the company is Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to be awarded a perfect score of 10 during an Olympic competition. Bela Karolyi, later Romanian gymnastics coach, discovered Comaneci at just the age of six. Her first competition was at the national junior championships 1969 where she placed 13th. She did well in the 1970 competition. She won three golds in her first competition at a pre-Olympic junior meet in 1972, which was a the communist countries of the bloc. In 1973 and 1974she won the junior all-around champion. She beat the Russian Lyudmila Torishcheva who was the five-time European Champion at her first international senior competition in 1975. At this competition, she won four golds and a silver. The American Cup was hers to win. American Cup in New York City in 1976. She was the first female to do an backward double salto to perform a dismount from the bar that is uneven.
